The Artist’s Story
Sam Mc Millan
This self-taught folk artist delights in telling you stories of growing up as a sharecropper’s son and his experiences working in tobacco warehouses and serving as a handyman in North Carolina.
It was in 1987 that Sam found himself at the Hanes family compound in Winston-Salem working a handyman. Mrs. Hanes hired a local woman to paint beds in a folk-art style when she discovered Sam could paint too. Soon he was painting wagons, furniture, picture frames and whatever else came into his head.
In this oil painting, titled “Spring,” splashes of brightly-colored dots, primitive figures and Sam’s distinctive signature preserve as a work of art – a recycled treasure.
